Maserati Coupe Maserati Coupe The Maserati Coupé and Spyder is a grand tourer produced by Italian automaker Maserati since 2002. The nameplates refer to the four-seater coupé and two-seater roadster versions respectively. They are based on the 3200 GT, which is not sold in the United States. Returned to sturdy financial ground thanks to involvement from Ferrari and Fiat, Maserati made a return to the U.S. market in 2002 with the new Coupe and accompanying convertible-top Spyder. Based on the 3200 GT, a model never sold in the U.S., the Coupe offers a premium grand-touring driving experience with Italian flair. It features styling by Giugiaro's ItalDesign studio; a double-wishbone suspension; a Ferrari-designed, normally aspirated V8; and an available electrohydraulic manual transmission named Cambiocorsa. The Cambiocorsa unit is similar in design to Ferrari's "F1" automated-clutch manual transmission. There is no clutch pedal, and it allows gearshifts to be made in the blink of an eye via paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. Also available on the Maserati Coupe is a "Skyhook" active suspension. This system automatically adjusts the stiffness of the suspension according to different road and driving conditions for improved ride comfort and more dynamic sports handling. Beautiful leather work is as Italian as cannoli. The Coupe shows off its heritage with fine hides and impeccable craftsmanship. A dip in the center of the dash echoes the signature Maserati grille, and the various controls are much easier to use compared with past Masers. More than a 2+2 with "occasional" rear seats best left to small children, the Maserati Coupe accommodates four adults with those in back enjoying sculpted and supportive seats. A variety of custom trim options, such as contrasting piping on the seats and carbon-fiber accents for the dash and console, are available. The combination of 390 horsepower, a lightning-quick F1 shifter, active suspension components and a satisfying V8 rumble prove nothing short of magical. It may sound gauche to call it a Mazda Miata on steroids, but that was the impression after running hard through our favorite set of twisties. Unlike so many exotics that impress you with their size almost as much as their performance, the easily managed Maserati doesn't intimidate you while you're driving it. Though the Coupe can't match the outright pace of the top BMW M or Mercedes-Benz AMG machines, flinging the Coupe through corners is an absolute joy, with throttle, brakes and steering inputs working with each other to slingshot the car between apexes. Maserati GranSport Maserati GranSport The GranSport (the Spyder version is the 90 th Anniversary Edition, not GranSport) is a modified version of the Coupé and Spyder with aerodynamic body cladding, a chrome mesh grille, carbon fiber interior trim, and special 19 inch wheels. It uses the Skyhook active suspension, with a 0.4 in (10 mm) lower ride height, and the Cambiocorsa transmission is recalibrated for quicker shifts. The exhaust is also specially tuned to "growl" on start-up and full throttle. Maserati has come full circle. At first, Maserati built beautiful Italian sports cars that possessed speed, style and handling, just like countryman rival Ferrari. After rubbing shoulders with Ferrari through the '50s, '60s and '70s, Maserati stopped building memorable exotic sports cars and instead produced the forgettable BiTurbo of the '80s. Although these twin-turbo coupes (and later convertibles and sedans) were fast, they suffered from bland, anonymous design and horrid reliability. Respect for the Maserati company, as well as the cars themselves, was gone from the U.S. market by the early 1990s. The 2006 Maserati GranSport increases the sporting quotient a bit thanks to a few engine tweaks, a revised suspension with a slightly lower ride height, and a stiffer state of tune, bigger wheels and tires and some effective aerodynamic add-ons. The electrohydraulic transmission, tweaked to provide slightly quicker shifting, is also standard with this model. As with the Coupe, the GranSport can be had with the Skyhook active suspension. This system automatically adjusts the stiffness of the suspension according to different road and driving conditions for improved ride comfort and more dynamic sport handling. Similar to modern Ferraris, the GranSport has a "Sport" button on the center console that allows the driver to set many of the car's parameters for more aggressive driving. These include increased damping stiffness for the Skyhook suspension, faster gearshifts and accelerator response and reduced intervention of the stability and traction control systems. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The Maserati GranSport is available as a four-seat coupe and a two-seat convertible known as the Spyder. Among the standard features are dual power seats with driver memory, automatic climate control, a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and an alarm system. Setting the GranSport apart from the standard Coupe are a lowered suspension (10mm), 19-inch wheels, mesh grille, aerodynamic tweaks (such as a lower front spoiler and flared rocker panels), aluminum pedals and a steering wheel wrapped in leather and carbon fiber. The GranSport Spyder boasts the same upgrades over last year's discontinued base Spyder and features an interior trimmed in leather and "technical" fabric that graces the dash as well. The luxury-themed GranSport LE coupe features a high-power audio system with CD changer, xenon headlights, heated front seats, red brake calipers and the Skyhook active suspension. Many of the LE features are available a la carte for the GranSport coupe and Spyder. Also of some significance is the ability of the GranSport buyer to customize his car with a multitude of interior trim color combinations, as well as being able to choose unique out-of-range exterior paint colors. Maserati backs its cars with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. Interior Design and Special Features Beautiful leather work is as Italian as cannoli. Maserati Quattroporte Maserati Quattroporte The Maserati Quattroporte is a luxury four-door sedan made by Maserati of Italy. The name translated from Italian literally means "four doors". There have been five generations of the car, each separated by a period of roughly five years. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2007 Maserati Quattroporte is a performance luxury sedan offered in DuoSelect and Automatic models. The two have virtually identical engines, styling and features, but differ in transmission. DuoSelect is an F1-style clutchless manual with paddle shifters, while Automatic is rather obviously a traditional automatic transmission. Both models are offered in base, Executive GT and Sport GT trim levels. Standard equipment on the base Quattroporte includes 18-inch wheels (19 with the DuoSelect), the adaptive "Skyhook" suspension system, bi-xenon headlamps, a sunroof, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, front heated seats, a Bose audio system with six-CD changer and a navigation system. The Sport GT is additionally equipped with a chrome grille, 20-inch wheels, cross-drilled brakes, a sport steering wheel, carbon-fiber interior trim and steering-wheel paddles on Automatic models. The Executive GT is more luxury-oriented, adding a different grille and 19-inch wheels, a wood steering wheel, rear climate controls and a rear-seat comfort package with heat, cooling and massage. Options for all trim levels include run-flat tires; front parking sensors; a rear-seat heating system; front- and rear-seat Comfort Packages with heat, cooling and massage; pull-down rear-seat tables; a "Clima" Pack with rear-seat climate controls and side blinds; and a rear DVD entertainment system. Quattroportes can also be customized with a wide selection of exterior paints and interior leather color combinations. Powertrains and Performance The 2007 Maserati Quattroporte is powered by a 4.2-liter V8 engine attached to either a regular six-speed automatic transmission or a DuoSelect F1-style paddle-shift clutchless six-speed manual. Automanual function is standard, however, with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters optional. The DuoSelect is essentially a manual transmission without a clutch and is shifted by the driver via paddle shifters or by the car itself. Compared to the Automatic model, this quasi-automatic feature is jerkier and feels more like a traditional manual in traffic. Although the DuoSelect will appeal to performance-minded drivers, the excellent new automatic should better suit American tastes. The automatic is all-new for 2007, offering smoother performance and a more traditional operation than the clutchless gearbox. The V8 produces 400 horsepower with both transmissions, but the version on the Automatic model makes nine more pound-feet of torque than the DuoSelect's 331. Maserati says a Quattroporte Automatic will run to 60 mph in the mid 5-second range, while DuoSelect trims about a half-second off that time. Interior Design and Special Features As a low-volume, high-end luxury car, the 2007 Maserati Quattroporte can be customized to meet an individual buyer's needs with a variety of cabin trims and leather colors that can be mixed and matched throughout the cabin. Desire a hideous combo of Cuiuo burnt orange and Bordeaux red? Maserati will set you up, although the word "stupido" may be liberally thrown around the Modena factory. Seating is comfortable for touring (though we'd like more lateral support) and tailored for four, as indicated by the rear seat's aggressive contour. The standard navigation system is also one of the slowest-reacting and poorly detailed systems we've ever used. The handsome dash and console has a healthy dollop of look-alike buttons, so it takes awhile to acclimate to some controls. Driving Impressions While the new automatic transmission makes the 2007 Maserati Quattroporte a little less sporty, the Automatic's more familiar gear-selection procedure and the crisp-yet-friendly predictability of its shifts are just right for the American luxury-car buyer. The DuoSelect, however, offers lightning-quick gearchanges (35 percent faster in the Sport GT) and perfectly matches revs with every downshift. Regardless of transmission, the Quattroporte is responsive and very well-balanced, changing direction swiftly and easily like a car half its size. The Automatic's adjustable suspension is tuned a bit softer for comfort than the DuoSelect, but this is only a negative when it's pushed especially hard into a corner.
